Gautam Gambhir is all set to make his comeback for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy game against Punjab that starts on Wednesday at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in New Delhi. The former Delhi skipper missed the previous game due to a shoulder niggle. In his absence, Sarthak Ranjan made his first-class debut for the state team. Gambhir donned the commentator’s hat during the T20I series between India and Australia, which gave to birth to a speculation that he might retire soon.

The veteran Indian batsman though do not seem to have to retirement plans as he has returned for Delhi. The presence of Gambhir has made this contest a bigger one as Punjab also have Yuvraj Singh in their ranks, other than a few more international players. Delhi will be without their key pacers as Ishant Sharma is on national duty while Navdeep Saini is in New Zealand with India A team.

The upcoming Ranji games will be quite crucial for Gambhir and Yuvraj, who were released by their respective Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises. Gambhir was a part of Delhi Daredevils and also led them in the initial stages of the tournament. However, a failure in bringing out desired results saw him stepping down from the captaincy post. There were expectations that he would be released and as it turned out to be, he was one of the biggest players to be released.

Yuvraj was a part of Kings XI Punjab in the previous season but the 36-year-old struggled and could just manage 65 runs in eight games. He was also dropped from playing XI on occasions and was expected to be released by his franchise.

Both Gambhir and Yuvraj might struggle to get a buyer in the upcoming IPL auction but they have an opportunity to present their cases with a few good knocks in the upcoming Ranji matches.
